Center of Cartoon Studies Presents A Guide to Governance

The annual Annenberg Constitution Day Civics Survey finds that only 26% of Americans can name all three branches of government. And we don’t need a survey to know that too many young people feel disenfranchised from civic life. Can a comic book help? The answer is yes!

This Is What Democracy Looks Like, A Graphic Guide To Governance teaches teens and tweens about the way our government works. Created by the renowned Center for Cartoon Studies (CCS), this 32-page comic book has been used in classrooms throughout the country.

“There’s a growing hunger for more civics education and this democracy comic meets that need,” says Max Silverman, Executive Director, Center for Educational Leadership. “It is hard to imagine a more important book to get in the hands of students young and old.”

Comics can engage and inform even the most reluctant of readers,” says cartoonist and CCS director James Sturm, “And if you’re feeling bummed out about the state of our democracy, than know that this comic was designed for you.”

Mikva, a Chicago non-profit that specializes in civic education, introduced the comic to 200 teachers from throughout the country who attended their Action Civics Summer conference. “As a fun and accessible classroom resource this comic supports students in understanding our democracy and their power to participate in it. The teachers loved it.” says Jill Bass, Mikva Challenge’s Chief Education Officer.
