A little less than a week before the event, we sent out
press releases to about 20 newspapers and local TV and radio
stations, and it appears it worked! We decided to open up about
1/2 hour earlier than our usual 11 am start time, mostly due to
many fans already gathering outside. Not long after we let the
first group of customers inside, WNEP, our ABC news station,
arrived to take some footage and talk to fans. The event was
televised on the 6:00 news that night in a piece that ran right
after the top stories. Our local entertainment newspaper, THE
ELECTRIC CITY, also did a piece on FCBD, an interviewed us in an
article that ran on Thursday before the event, which we believe
helped bring fans into the store on Saturday.
It was busy all day long, with our guests, DC Comics'
artist Tom Derenick, and local cartoonist, Rob Blizzard, signing
autographs and doing sketches the entire time. We saw male and
female fans of all ages and races. My favorite quote of the day
came from a little boy whose father is a regular customer of
ours. As he picked up a few comics from our piles, I asked him
"Don't you have enough comics in your house?, to which he
replied, "Nope!" A future fan we hope!
We had a free raffle for the FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE
SILVER SURFER movie poster & t-shirt the studio provided to
retailers, and customers were definitely excited about it. In
doing so, we also gathered a list of names and email addresses
in order to stay in touch with the newer customers. (We made
them aware of this.) Hopefully we can provide them with
information throughout the year about exciting comic events,
stories, store promotions, etc., which will make them want to
come back again and again.
