“Free Comic Book Day is one of the best opportunities available to bring in both new and lapsed fans,” says Marvel SVP Sales & Marketing David Gabriel. “It’s a chance to set up new stories and status quos, as well as show off new and exciting titles. With that in mind, we’re thrilled to bring two additional original stories to Free Comic Book Day this year. Secret Empire and Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man are poised to be two of the year’s biggest books, and we can’t wait for fans to get a sneak peek at both."
It's not a huge surprise that Marvel would introduce a new series for Spider-Man, considering the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming release featuring newcomer Tom Holland. Fans praised Holland's performance in Captain America: Civil War because it was a call back to the Peter Parker we're all intimately familiar with: the big-hearted, down-on-his-luck, New York kid trying to do some good in the world while juggling school and taking care of his Aunt May.
“With [Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man] we’re using the same Spider-Man continuity, but shifting the spotlight back to his NYC environment and supporting cast,” says series writer Chip Zdarsky speaking with Entertainment Weekly. “But even though we’re pushing to make it a more personal book, we’re still going to have big adventures with ramifications that’ll be felt in other books. If I had a true mission statement for the book it would be: ‘Have fun, have heart, have stakes.’”
More to come later today on the specifics of Secret Empire--stay tuned, true believers!
